Close Encounters of the Angel Kind

Part 6 of the Angel Series

This happened so many years ago that it is difficult to know how to start this angel story. It was my first encounter with angels and happened under terrible circumstances. At least the circumstances felt terrible to me a single mom who had moved away from her hometown to go to graduate school.

When I started graduate school and my job as a graduate teaching assistant, I was a new convert to Christianity, newly baptized in the Holy Spirit, having no experience with the church other than a very superficial Catholic experience as a child. My classes included interactive workshops where our work was read and critiqued by the other students as well as the professor. During a class, the other students, including a professing Christian who I considered a friend, attacked my composition, treating it and me with open contempt.

Here is where my angel story begins.

Devastated by the humiliating attack and feeling betrayed by my friend, I returned to the shabby apartment I shared with my little boy, talked it over with God — without being interested in His opinion —and made the decision to pack my bags and go home.

The next day was payday. Back in the old days, you had to pick up your check in person so I was walking across the quad to the administration building. It was a glorious sunny day. The quad was filled with vibrant green grass and towering old oak trees. As I walked my eyes were opened and I saw in a vision a ewe sheep being harried by wolves. She would trot away from the wolves, stop and baa. The wolves would close in and tear at the wool on her back legs, startling her so that she trotted forward a bit before stopping and baaing. This repeated several times then my view of the quad returned.

In something of a daze, I picked up my check and started back across the quad to return to my apartment. I knew with a deep certainty that the sheep represented me and the wolves my classmates. I asked the Lord why the wolves had only been able to scare the sheep in my vision. They hadn’t actually torn her flesh.

In answer I was given my first vision of angels. I saw two angels, one on my left and one on my right pressed closely to my body, their heads turned away, eyes searching for predators. They appeared transparent and at the same time solid. In that moment, I felt so safe that looking up at the building towering above me, I wondered if I could be harmed even if its bricks cracked and fell on me.

That encounter with angels gave me the courage to face my classmates with my head held high. I decided to stay in school and eventually graduated with honors.

I think it is reasonable to ask God to open our eyes to the spiritual world, not just to the bad guys lurking there, but to the good guys who are faithful to the Lord and who protect us.

For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways. Psalm 91:11

God bless,
